Introduction to UL
UL is primarily engaged in product safety certification and business safety verification services. Its ultimate goal is to ensure that the market receives goods with a certain level of safety, thereby contributing to the protection of personal health and property safety. In terms of product safety certification as an effective means of eliminating technical barriers to international trade, UL also plays an active role in promoting the development of international trade.
UL was founded in 1894. In its initial stage, UL mainly relied on the fire insurance department for funding to sustain its operations. It was not until 1916 that UL became fully self-reliant. After nearly a century of development, UL has become a world-renowned certification body, possessing a comprehensive and rigorous organizational management system, standard development, and product certification procedures. UL is governed by a board of directors composed of representatives from safety experts, government officials, consumers, education, utilities, insurance, and standards departments, with daily operations handled by the president and vice president. Currently, UL has five laboratories in the United States, with its headquarters located in Northbrook, north of Chicago, and corresponding laboratories established in Taiwan and Hong Kong. In the United States, for consumers, UL is a symbol of safety marks, and globally, UL is one of the most trusted conformity assessment providers for manufacturers.
Introduction to UL Mark
UL Mark Style
The UL Mark is typically affixed to products and/or their packaging to signify that the product has undergone UL certification and meets safety standards.
compose
The most important component of these marks is the UL pattern symbol, which is a registered trademark of UL.
Requirements for the use of UL Mark
The minimum height of a registered trademark should be 3/64 inch.
2. When the diameter of the outer circle marked by UL is less than 3/8 inch, the registered trademark symbol can be ignored if it is not clearly readable under naked eye.
3. The marking can be directly and permanently affixed to the unchanged product using stamping, molding, ink printing, screen printing, or similar methods.
4. Obtaining the logo: Manufacturers can reproduce it or obtain it from authorized UL dealers.
5. Ulus Mark (only "us" without "c"): a safety mark for products entering the US market; cUL (only "c" without "us"): a safety mark for products entering the Canadian market; cULus Mark: a safety mark for products entering both the US and Canadian markets
Service Items
The types of UL's product certification and testing services can be mainly divided into listing, recognition, and classification.
1. Listed:
Generally speaking, listing is only applicable to complete products and various devices and apparatuses that can be replaced or installed on-site by qualified personnel. Products that fall under the UL listing service include: household appliances, medical equipment, computers, commercial equipment, and various electrical products used in buildings, such as power distribution systems, fuses, wires, switches, and other electrical components. Products that have been listed by UL can usually bear the UL listing mark on each individual product. Usage of the listing mark.
2. Recognized:
Recognition service is a program within UL's services, and the products it certifies can only be used as components or raw materials on UL-listed, graded, or other recognized products. Recognition products are not structurally complete or have certain restrictions on their use to ensure they meet expected safety performance. In most cases, the tracking service for recognition products falls under category R. Recognition products that fall under category L include electronic wire (AVLV2), processed wire (ZKLU2), wire harness (ZPFW2), aluminum wire (DVVR2), and metal flexible tube (DXUZ2). Recognition products are required to bear a recognition mark.
3. Classification:
The graded service only evaluates specific hazards of products, or evaluates products that comply with standards other than UL standards (including internationally recognized standards such as IEC and ISO standards). Generally, most graded products are not for consumer use, but for industrial or commercial use. The graded mark in the UL mark indicates that the product has certain restrictions and specified scope when evaluated by UL. For example, for chemicals such as solvents used in industry, only the scope of potential fires that may occur when they reach their ignition temperature is evaluated. The graded service for some products is the same as the listed service, but generally only evaluates one or several aspects of the product. In the United States, medical X-ray diagnostic equipment and similar devices must comply with national laws and regulations related to radiation emission and beam accuracy. However, because UL only considers X-rays as graded products, it only evaluates their mechanical properties, electrical properties, and other non-radiation performance aspects.
4. Multiple listing, multiple recognition, or multiple graded services:
When a UL applicant, after obtaining the aforementioned listing, recognition, or classification services, intends to produce its products under the name of another company to meet sales needs, it may apply for multiple listings, recognitions, or classification services. In this case, the manufacturer that obtains the listing, recognition, or classification is allowed to use the name of another company listed in the product catalog. However, except for the company code, product code, or other characteristics deemed acceptable by UL, the product must be consistent with the originally listed, recognized, or classified product.
5. "AL" column for naming, approval, or grading services
If the UL applicant does not wish to obtain listing, recognition, or grading services in their own company's name, they may apply for listing, recognition, or grading in the name of another business (usually a retailer or wholesaler), known as "AL" listing, recognition, or grading services. The difference between this and multiple listing, recognition, or grading services is that the applicant is not the listed party.
6. System certification services:
As a member of the International Accreditation Forum (IAF), UL is extensively involved in ISO9000 quality system certification, ISO14000 environmental protection certification, QS9000 automotive industry quality system certification, and AS9000 aircraft industry quality system certification services. A total of 116 factories in China have obtained UL's system certification; of these, 21 are ISO9001 certified, 85 are ISO9002 certified, 1 is ISO14001 certified, and 9 are QS9000 certified.
